Nate found it unnerving how quickly she lost herself in her work. He wasn’t sure how to feel about her obvious relief over asking her CIA contact for help. He didn’t judge her for where she’d worked or why she’d left. He appreciated the skills she’d learned there and how she used those abilities now. He wasn’t too proud to admit they needed all the help they could get on this one.

He was less enthused that she would definitely owe someone a favor down the line. Until they heard back, there wasn’t much to do until the storm cleared. Nate struggled to keep his mind on Larson rather than Claudia as the wind raged outside.

Waiting and wondering weren’t his strong suits. He wanted details that would give them a viable way into that compound. He kept turning over the mismatched pieces that made up the Wayne Larson puzzle, but he wasn’t making any progress.

The bastard’s humanitarian efforts gave him a platform and access to people who thought they were improving the world through their donations and their time. And maybe they were. Some of his pet projects were stable, managed by people who appeared sane.

“It’s like a Ponzi scheme,” he said to himself as he tossed another log onto the fire. He had every confidence Claudia would unravel this mess, but it seemed a safe assumption that Larson started legitimate endeavors and diverted the bulk of the profits to his underground operations.

Literally. The guns and underground shooting ranges couldn’t be as simple as a billionaire indulging a hobby. Not in the context of Larson’s contacts and the people who seemed to flock to him, populating the property he kept quietly expanding.

Claudia’s family farm bordered Larson land, but the man hadn’t made an offer, he’d taken one of the heirs. As a girlfriend or captive, Nate didn’t much care anymore, as long as they rescued Diana. Claudia had lost so much, and pain in the ass or not, he knew she wouldn’t give up her sister without a hard fight.

He would. In her shoes, he’d walk away without a second thought. For Claudia, being tenacious was only part of the equation. She knew how to love. She understood commitment spoken and unspoken. Nate wanted to laugh at himself. The only commitment he knew was his contract with the Guardian Agency.

Family was a myth where he came from. Love was a pretty word for a moment of physical ecstasy, not some lifelong X-factor. He understood need and satisfying that need. Relationships only burned up the people dumb enough to get trapped in them.

Carefully, so she wouldn’t notice, he studied her from his seat near the fire. They were so different. So why couldn’t he mute the desire he felt for her? In an instant, the worst case scenario played through his head. He could seduce her while they waited for the storm to break. They’d have amazing sex, go save her sister, and then they’d never see each other again. He’d go back to his work, she’d do the same.
